The global WordPress Community Team has officially started its search for a host city for WordCamp India 2027. This landmark gathering will represent the fourth annual flagship event for the project, signaling a new chapter for the community in the region.
Karen Almassi, the newly appointed Head of Operations and Events for the WordPress Project at Automattic, issued the call for applications via the Make WordPress Community blog this Wednesday. Local communities have until the end of June to submit their proposals, with the official host city announcement expected to follow in early August.
“There are no pre-selected host cities, no appointed leads, and no locked-in dates,” Almassi stated. “The where, who, and when are all open – and we want the community to shape those decisions together.”
The decision to elevate WordCamp India to flagship status – alongside WordCamp Europe, WordCamp US, and WordCamp Asia – was first revealed last month during WordCamp Asia 2026 in Mumbai. This move recognizes India’s role as one of the world’s most significant and rapidly expanding WordPress markets, evidenced by the Campus Connect education initiative, which originated in Ajmer and now operates in 18 schools across multiple borders.
Currently, the field is entirely open. There are no predetermined leads or fixed dates on the calendar. Once a city is selected, the project will open a subsequent call for local organizers to spearhead the effort.

To be considered, applicant cities must demonstrate they can meet rigorous logistical requirements:
- A venue capable of hosting more than 2,000 attendees
- Ample space for sponsor halls and a dedicated Contributor Day
- Robust internet and AV infrastructure to support high – quality global livestreams
- Convenient travel access for both local and international visitors
- A history of local community activity and organizing expertise
“This is just the starting criteria for a conversation, so if your city has strong community energy but needs support on logistics, that’s worth discussing,” Almassi noted, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the selection process.
While a finalized budget is not mandatory at this initial stage, applications must include estimated costs for venues, catering services, and internet provision. Communities that require additional guidance regarding logistics are encouraged to reach out through the #community-events channel on the WordPress Slack workspace.
Although the exact dates for WordCamp India 2027 remain unconfirmed, organizers are currently aiming for a target window between October and December.
A specialized WordPress Central Events team will be introduced to manage the event’s most technical and demanding elements, including logistics and AV operations.
“With this support, events can remain community-driven while also professionalizing key areas of execution,” Almassi explained.
Interested community members can find the application form and further details through Almassi’s original announcement on the project blog.
