Spotify Expands Generative AI Playlist Tool to Podcasts for Premium Users

Spotify is moving beyond music with its AI – powered “Prompt Playlists” feature. Originally debuted in New Zealand late last year and reaching North American shores in January, this tool allows listeners to describe their specific audio cravings in plain language. By processing these natural language requests, the streaming giant generates curated musical selections tailored to the user’s mood or activity.

The company has now scaled this artificial intelligence capability to cover its vast library of podcasts. This expansion aims to simplify content discovery by blending multiple data points to deliver a highly personalized listening experience. According to the platform, the system relies on a sophisticated mix of three distinct elements to assemble these bespoke podcast collections for its global audience.

Evolution of Spotify’s AI Prompting Capabilities

The initial rollout of the musical version occurred in December, followed by a wider release across the United States shortly after in January. This phased approach allowed the service to refine the user experience before broadening the scope of the AI tool to include spoken – word content alongside its core music offerings.

The “Prompt Playlist” feature allows you to precisely describe what you want to hear and set rules for your personalized playlist […] Users can set the playlist to update daily or weekly. Once the playlist is created, they can either edit the original prompt or start from scratch if they are not satisfied with the result.

Reports from Engadget confirm that the integration has successfully crossed over into the podcasting sphere. This means that users who enjoy the convenience of AI – generated music lists can now apply the same logic to finding their next favorite episode or series without manual searching.

Spotify provides several examples of prompts that can be used to create podcast playlists, including a user asking the bot to put together a playlist “about science and innovation” and another “with the most important entertainment news from the last few days.”

To ensure the results are both relevant and engaging, Spotify clarifies that the recommendation engine does not operate in a vacuum. Instead, it synthesizes the user’s intent with their established preferences. The platform identifies three primary drivers that dictate what ends up in a generated podcast queue:

  • Your prompt in natural language
  • Your listening history
  • Current world events

Access to this innovative tool is currently limited to Premium subscribers in select markets, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden, New Zealand, Canada, and the USA. While the rollout has commenced, the company notes that it typically takes anywhere from a few days to several weeks for the update to reach all eligible accounts across these regions.
